2007 (newflyer@sympatico.ca) at Tue May 26 10:45, 1998 said:

Link House Magazine

Volvo Olympian,

Hong Kong Buses

Don Craggs guides us through the intricacies of bus

fleets serving Hong Kong.

All the ceremonies and celebrations are now and truly over and The

Special Administrative Region(SAR) is looking to the future. The

SAR China (Hong Kong) seems to be weathering all the storms that are

sent its way and for the model collector it has been a magnificient time,

full of new releases and unexpected surprises issues. This is especially

so wth the Corgi(Oriental Omnibus Collection) and EFE Special issues

of Hong Kong and Macau buses.

An excellent series of hard cover books specifically dealing with

Hong Kong's larger bus companies (the CMB; the KMB; Citybus; Argos operators)

are in the shops and readily obtainable (written by Mike Davis,

published by DTS publishing). There are twoseries of specialist books published

and available here in Hong Kong, such as the Hong Kong Buses Yesr Book

and the Fleet Directory of Hong Kong Buses(both 1997 and 1998).

Whilst much of the text is in Chinese, the little that is in English is both very

informative and invaluable for the Hong Kong bus enthusiast. It is worthwhile trying

to obtain a copy even if only for the photographs for prototypes.

Those who wish can access the Internet for the three major bus companies at the

following addresses:

Citybus(錯的,wrong address by the author)

HTTP//www/citybus.comHK

KMB(錯的,wrong address bu the author)

HTTP//www.HKstar.com.netmarket./KMB/.

China Motor Bus(少許錯,little bit wrong)

HTTP//www.cmb.com.hk

On the die-case model from there have been a number of Hong Kong

specific toy and model buses issued by Corgi, plus two

offerings from Exclusive First Edition.

Disappointingly, some of the models produced up to now can really be

regarded as toys rather than models; however, most of them have

a 'Certificate of Authenticity' and a manufacturing run of 5000 to 10000 models

(this despite the announcement of 17000 of the Citybus reunification

livery, which was not produced in this quantity; however, 16000 of the

KMB wewre produced). Irrespective of their accuracy, all models/

toys in this expanding range have become much sought-after and tend to

command high premium prices both in Hong Kong and in the UK.

The first model bus came out in 1993(Corgi No. 91707). This is

a version of the Corgi MCW Metrobus in the colours of the China Motor Bus Company

(CMB). There is a sky blue lower deck with an off-white upper,

and a black band subdiving the two. There is an incorrect black outlined

cream cheat line around the waist of the lowe deck--incorrect as on the prototype

bus (MC1) this is raised at the sides in the region of the

after engine shroud. The livery and printed details are neatly applied and are good

representations. It uses an unusual box which is much flatter than

the more common Corgi style and features a nice(but not very

clear) photograph of the offside of the prototype bus. The prototype is one of

the MCW series 1 so the model should have the drop-sown nearside windscreen and a

different front panel and bumper. The model is of the Mark 2 version and is taken from the Corgi standard 'toy' range, which is to 1/64th scale. It was commissioned by the Hong Kong TRansport Society.

Severe collectors' mania developed for all CMB-based models when it was announced by the Hong Kong government that is was withdrawing that company's franchise. Some of the CMB routes have been re-allocated to Citybus and the remainder are up for open tender. Model prices have risen dramatically already here, with manu collectors buying all thr models they can as investments.

The second model bus in the series is the Kowloon Canton Railway Company's MCW(Corgi no. 91710), which shows the distinctive colour scheme(white/grey with white outlined thick red stripes) well. The model is packed in a silver-grey box similar to the CMB MCW box already mentioned, and the front has a photograph of the offside of the actual bus. This is fleet number 120, route number K16, bound for Kowloon railway station, and ther is a KCRC mltiple unit from the same manufacturer(MCW) in the background. It also bears the legend 'Hong Kong Transport Society'.

Continued....

The date of manufacture is 1994. The illustration on the certificate shows the major error for this model (which is, correctly, the Mark 2 prototype), the absence of the second exit door. The door sizes are also incorrect as the entrance door is narrow one and the exit is of normal width. This also makes the lower deck saloon front side windows incorrect. Not so readily appartent is the fact that the window arrangement on the model buson the offside is incorrect as the staircase could be positioned in the second bay. The scale is 1/64th.

The third model dated 1995(no. 91706) and delivered in December of the year is also of the Corgi MCW Metrobus. It is also based on the Mark 2 prototype and carries the fleet number M 51. It is on route number 31M bound for Shek Lei(Lei Pui Street) and is in the later colours of the Kowloon Motor Bus Co. Ltd. The intake grille on the front bumper differs from the prototype as the KMB bus has multiple vertical slats and the model has four larger sections. The colour scheme is a deep cream with a deep cream with a carnation red roof, lettering and lowering skirt. Collectors should keep a look out for a version of this model which has red rather than brown seats, as this is a rare model.

This and the previous models were made by Mattel. All Mattel, Corgi and EFE models are manufactured in mainland China.

The box for this model is similar in size and shape to that mentioned for the CMB and KCRC Metrobus. The wording on this box, which has a red top with a clear plastic window to view the bus, is 'Metrobus Double Decker' and Chinese characters. The lower part of the box has the KMB stylised initials repeated overall in red.

Similarly to the KCRC model the KMB prototypes were fitted with a small front entrance dooe and a larger midship exit door. This door made the nearside window sizes differ when compared tothe model. The offside is also incorrect as the prototypes of these models also hacve the staircase after the first saloon window bay. The real MCW Metrobuses are still active and were a popular Hong Kong purchase by all of the larger operators. Both six and four wheeled versions are currently in service.

Produced in 1995 but issued later in 1996 by Corgi Classics, was the long running Corgi version of the open topped Routemaster. This appeared in the pleasing livery of the Peak Tramways Company. Citybus manage and maintain the Peak Tramways buses which are permanently engaged in the shuttle service from the Central ferry terminal to the lower Peak Tramways station. As the standard Corgi casting has been used for this model the upper deck stainless steel railings are not depicted correctly but again the livery is neatly applied and it is a pleasing souvenir. The model number for this is 32401. The scale is also 1/64th.

The prototype of this model has led a chequered career as it started life as RM 1703 in the London Transport fleet. It them went to Clydeside and actually ran in that group's livery when in service here in Hong Kong as Citybus number 3.

The next bus model that appeared in 1996(40407) is a good model of the Weymann body from the Corgi OOC 1/76th scale range but unfortunately incorrect for the representation of the prototype which places this model more in the toy categary than a scale model. It is meant to represent the Kowloon Mator Bus(1933) Ltd., forst double decker (which is preserved and about to be placed in a meseum together with other bus examples) originally fitted with a metal sections CKD body that was assembled by the KMB themselves. The ptptotype has a nearly striaght sided skirt.

On the model the lower deck windows are too deep, which makes the cream cheat band far too low. The lower margin of the windows should align higher than the bonnet line. At stages of their career the cream cheat line on these and also the subsequent tin front Daimlers that followed was carried on and across the body above the bonnet and below the driver's windows and windshield. It cannot do this on the body of this model.

Perhaps the most disappointing feature of this particular model is the use of the AEC exposed radiator which has been simply sprayed black so that the AEC shape is not highlighted. There is very little resemblance between the narrowerdistinctive fluted Daimler CVG 5/6 exposed radiator style and the representation on this particular model. The very brave modeller could change this with one of the white metal radiators but the model's collectable velue would be reduced. The colour cheme appears to be authentic with some fine printing in the lower deck cheat line expousing the proud owner's company name in full. The company crest is larger than the prototype for production clarity.

The model comes in a bright yellow flat box with the plastic see-through top and a similar base to the KMB Metrobus metnioned preiously. The top bears the legend 'First Double Decker bus in Hong Kong', together with Chinese characters. This model was commisioned by KMB themselves and is now very hard to obtain. However, there is a follow up model(40408) due for release in February 1998 wherein the basic model is the same but the destination has been changed. The original issue is for route number 3--Jordan Road Ferry to Chuk Un--and the re-issue is for Route 1--Star Ferry to Kowloon City. These are historic roues in Kowloon pre-dating the harbour tunnels.

The next model was the first Hong Kong bus issued by Exclusive First Editions(EFE) and is again of a KMB bus(18004). It was issued in February 1997 in Hong Kong and is of a Daimler Fleetline. The route number is 5, bound for the Star Ferry. The fleet number is D890, the prototype of which is a Metsec bodied 32ft 9in version of a Daimler Fleetline.

For the model EFE altered the standard UK plastic window mouldings fot the 'tropicalised' sliding vertical style as used in Hong Kong.

As the bus is meant to depict the D class Fleetline the small window bay for these longer buses is missing. Again with this model the second exit door is not present and there is no representation of the Daimler badge on the engine shroud nor the front panel! The mistakes are compounded as the Certificate of Uathenticity illustrating the nearside of the prototype clearly shows the missing windows and door. 5200 examples of this model were produced.

There is a photograph of the prototype of this model in the Mike Davis KMB book. The much squarer bodystyle of the Metsec body is readily apparent. The illustration will help 'rivet counters' to determine what modifications are needed to turn the model into a more accurate scale representation, should they wish to. Had one of the KMB's second-hand-ex-UK buses(such as the Ribble, Trent, Northern General, Sheffield, or others) been chosen then a closer to prototype version could have been produced--with reservations of course.

May 1997 saw a surprise(but long rumoured) uncatalogued bus(43201) reach the Hong Kong market. This model is again by Corgi and depicts another bus of the KMB group. It is based on an 11 metre Alexander 'Royale' bodied bus. The modelis , however, of a 12 metre length air conditioned bus, fleet number 3AV112, which is a Volvo Olympian. The discrepancy in length is noticeable if you are one of the many thousand bus enthusiasts here in Hong Kong(or the world for that matter), as the model shows the small window present on the upper and lower deck for the 12m Hong Kong prototype. It copied the fine detail on the KMB white liveried air conditioned six wheel Leyland/Volvo Olympians well. The model is also to 1/76 th scale.

This six wheeled bus is not a standard Corgi issue as shown in the 1997 Corgi OOC catalogue, but a special Hong Kong issue ordered as a commercial promotion for the Kowloon Motor Bus Company. It was produced in 10000 unit run.

There are small faults with the model, such as the rear ventilator on some of the production models where the nearside ventilator cover has been printed upside down and on the wrong side. If you look closely at this ventilator cover has been printed upside down and on the wrong side. If you look closely at this ventilator you will notice that it has a blank space in the louvers which should be for the radiator filler cap--which is on the offside and of course at human hand level( the lower edge). As a result of the subterfuge regarding the length, the doors appear to be out of proportion. The lower deck seating is also not correct for this particular bus.

Taken overall this is perhaps the most accurate produced so far in this coveted series. The duration is authentic--it is for route 101 and bound for Kwun Tong--Yue Man Square which is on the Kowloon side near the Eastern Harbour Tunnel. Kwun Tong was formerly a major industrial factory area of Hong Kong before back to mainland China.

To be continued in June issue for Model Collectors.

The following is the checklist for far east buses:

To help readers identify the various models that have been produced with a Far East connection, we list the released (both already appeared and planned) with the manufacturer'x reference number and a brief description. We have included both Corgi and Exclusive First Editions relaeses.

In the case of Corgi, if a model appeared in the OOC catalogue it has been recorded as such; otherwise the model was a Hong Kong commision.

Many of the models are available from Corgi stockists, especially Gold Star Stockist. However, quantities of some Hong Kong commisions are available in the United Kingdom in such limited quantities that supplies are only available through the Regional Centres and the Corgi Heritage Centre in Heywood. In a few cases supplies are exceedingly limited in the UK, with only the Corgi Heritage Centre receiving them. (Key: KMB = Kowloon Motor Bus; KCRC = Kowloon Canton Railway Compant; * = model not released at time of writing)

wp12a (gw7112li@netvigator.com) at Tue May 26 07:57, 1998 said:

$21.40 -> $20.70 !
